Spotlight On: Ed our Product Master who always saves the day!
Ed is our resident coffee guru and our go-to Beemer when someone needs a hand - we can confirm one of the most used sentences in the office is “Ed, HELP!”. If he isn’t in the office herding & helping Beemers, he is at home roasting his own coffee beans and playing with his two sons.
While chatting to Ed, we’ve also discovered who keeps putting the iconic 90s boy band bangers on our Beembox (Beem’s music player) - 🎶 Bye, bye, bye 🎶
We thought it was time to put the spotlight on Ed and give him the limelight he truly deserves. Let’s dive in and get to know this Beemer and what drives him every day.
Q: What’s the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?
Get the kids ready for daycare. Once the kids are at daycare, make and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Q: How did you land the role you’re in now? And what did you do before Beem?
I joined Beem as a Business Analyst, and during that time I tried to get involved with everything to help make Beem the best product it could possibly be. The role transformed into a product role due to my pursuit of delivering a great product experience.
Previous to Beem, I have been a developer and have worked in FMCG, Industrial and Government.
Q: Can you tell us more about your product role and how it’s different from your previous role as a BA?
A lot of the skills and experiences that I gained as a BA transfer quite well over into a product role. The biggest difference between the two disciplines is the focus area. The main focus for a product manager is the product and the customer experience whereas a BA is more focused on business improvements and processes.
Q: Walk us through an average Tuesday in your shoes.
Check-in with the team in the morning to ensure we are on track with the work we have planned for. Throughout the day work through the product backlog with the team to ensure that the work is refined and prioritised so we understand what we need to work on and why.
Q: What’s your go-to productivity trick?
Taking some time out during the day to have a break such as exercising, having a coffee, or taking a walk. It is important to take care of yourself as you won’t be productive if your mind and body haven't had a chance to recharge.
Q: How would you describe the Beem team in one word?
Passionate. Everyone at Beem is passionate about what they do and the products they are working on.
Q: What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role?
The biggest challenge is to ensure I focus on the most important things first, there are so many interesting and fun things to do but it isn’t possible to do everything.
Q: How do you decide what is the most important?
By analysing data and listening to your customers. These two things will help you decide what is important to work on. Listening to the customers helps you decide what sort of features people want and need. By analysing the data you can target the features that can add the most value and also measure the results.
Q: What’s the one app on your phone that you can’t live without and why? (Aside from Beem, obviously)
Youtube as it is the only way to get my kids to sit still for a while when we are out.
Q: If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would you choose and why?
My kids, because who wouldn’t want to be a kid again? You get to have fun, play, and not have to worry about anything. The biggest decision you have to make is to decide what to watch on TV.
Q: What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?
Catching up with friends/family or at a playground to tire my kids out
Q: How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Loyal, Easygoing, Helpful (we agree!)
Q: What gets you excited/what are you really passionate about?
I am excited about a lot of things. I love food, coffee, and wine. Some might even call me a snob when it comes to these topics. (no comment)
Q: What was a pivotal moment in your life & why?
Having kids. They are the center of my life and I want the best for them. They provide me with a lot of joy and a lot of pain!
Q: If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?
I wish I had the ability of space-time manipulation so I could alter the flow of time, teleport, and time travel. Just like the character Hiro Nakamura from the tv drama Heroes.
Q: What artist/band is your guilty pleasure?
Guilty pleasure is the boy bands from the late 1990s/early 2000s such as Backstreet Boys, Nsync, and Westlife
